About Jenkinson / Hawkins / Bennett / Weeks - Foss / Cheetham / Copp / Broadhead
The earliest of my ancestors to arrive in Canada was my maternal great
grandfather, Joshua FOSS, who emigrated from England at the age of 27,
in 1869, aboard the SS Cleopatra, with his spouse, Rebecca COPP, and
two young sons, accompanied by his younger sister, Ann, settling in the Ottawa
area of Ontario. The CHEETHAM family was the next to emigrate, my
maternal grandmother, Sarah Jane CHEETHAM, arriving in Quebec City in
1885, at the age of 11, along with her parents, John Boothroyd CHEETHAM
and Mary Ann BROADHEAD, her grandparents, Thomas CHEETHAM and
Jane BOOTHROYD, four siblings, two aunts and one uncle, aboard the SS
Polynesian. Two months were spent at Rockland, Ontario before the family
settled in Ottawa. My mother, Gertrude Lillian FOSS was born in 1902 at
Margaret Street, Ottawa to Charles FOSS and Sarah Jane CHEETHAM.

The paternal side of my family did not emigrate to Canada until after the
turn of the century, circa 1912 - when my grandmother, Susan Elizabeth
JENKINSON (nee HAWKINS), accompanied by her two young sons and
mother, Susan Elizabeth HAWKINS (nee BENNETT), settled on a farm
in Fenwick, Ontario, later moving to Toronto.

The FOSS family had their roots in the County of Devon, Joshua
being born in 1841 in the parish of Diptford, a small village about 20 miles
west of the coastal town of Torquay. While the CHEETHAM family had
their roots in Dukinfield, Cheshire, John Boothroyd CHEETHAM was born
at Oldham, Lancashire in 1851.

The JENKINSON family had their roots in Yorkshire, William
JENKINSON, a Paper Maker, being born in 1794 at Firbeck. Thomas Weeks
JENKINSON was born at London in 1831, as was his son, Arthur Weeks
JENKINSON, at Paddington, London in 1868. My father Victor Jack
JENKINSON was born in 1902 at Chester Street, Wolverhampton, to Arthur
Weeks JENKINSON and Susan Elizabeth HAWKINS.

While the HAWKINS clan had their roots in the County of Gloucestershire,
James HAWKINS being born at Coleford in 1808, his son, James John
HAWKINS was born at Monmouth, Monmouthshire, Wales in 1849. His daughter,
Susan Elizabeth HAWKINS, was born at Birmingham, Warwickshire in 1878.

The BENNETT family had their roots in the County of Herefordshire
Michael BENNETT being born at Hentland in 1799. His daughter, Susan
Elizabeth BENNETT was born at Llangarren in 1844.
